Best Desktop Stands for the KEF LS50 Meta & Wireless II

The KEF LS50 Meta is one of the finest bookshelf speakers you can put on a desk — but most people rob themselves of a good part of its performance the moment they set it down. Placed flat on the desktop, the tweeter sits below ear height, the speaker fires past you instead of at you, and the desk itself becomes a sounding board that muddies the bass. A proper stand fixes all three problems. Here's how to get the LS50 Meta (and the LS50 Wireless II and LSX) sounding the way KEF intended on a desktop.

Why the LS50 Meta needs a stand on a desk

Three things separate a great desktop setup from a compromised one:

  • Ear height and imaging. The LS50 Meta images best when its tweeter (the Uni-Q driver) is roughly at ear level. Sitting flat on a desk, it's usually well below — so you lose focus, height and that "disappearing speaker" soundstage.
  • Toe-in and tilt. Nearfield listening rewards aiming each speaker at your head. A little inward angle and, on a low desk, a slight upward tilt puts you in the sweet spot.
  • Decoupling from the desk. A speaker bolted to a hard desktop transmits vibration straight into it, exciting resonances that smear the low end. Isolating the speaker from the desk keeps the bass tight and the midrange clean.

What to look for in a stand for the LS50 Meta

  • Enough height adjustment to lift the tweeter to ear height from a seated position.
  • Tilt adjustment so you can angle the speaker toward your ears.
  • Weight capacity to hold the speaker safely — the LS50 Meta is a dense, heavy bookshelf speaker.
  • Vibration damping and a stable base to decouple the speaker and resist wobble.
  • Cable management, because a tidy desk is half the appeal of going nearfield.

How the Ion Forge AKER fits the LS50 Meta

We designed the AKER Desktop Speaker Stands for exactly this job:

  • Height from 200 mm to 285 mm — enough range to bring the LS50 Meta's tweeter up to ear height at most desk-and-chair combinations.
  • ±20° of tilt with level indicators, so you can toe each speaker in and angle it up toward your listening position.
  • Up to 10 kg per stand, comfortably holding the LS50 Meta and the heavier LS50 Wireless II.
  • Vibration-damping mat and feet that isolate the speaker from the desk, plus solid steel base plates for a low, stable footing.
  • A removable cable loop to keep speaker and power cables tidy.

Quick setup tips

  • Set the height so the tweeter lands as close to ear level as you can get it when seated.
  • Angle each speaker in toward your head, and add a touch of upward tilt if you're looking down at them.
  • Aim for a rough equilateral triangle — the gap between the speakers about equal to the distance from each speaker to you.
  • Pull them a little away from the wall behind your desk if you can, to clean up the bass.

The same setup applies to the KEF LS50 Wireless II and LSX II, as well as most desktop and bookshelf speakers up to 10 kg — Genelec, Edifier, Kanto and more. If you're unsure whether your speakers are a good match, just get in touch and we'll help you work it out.

Get the height, angle and isolation right and the LS50 Meta stops sounding like a speaker on a desk and starts sounding like a proper pair of monitors. That's the whole idea behind the AKER — have a look here.
